President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the highly anticipated 19th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit. The President departed Nigeria on Sunday evening and landed early Monday morning at 3:03 a.m. Nigerian time (11:03 p.m. local time in Brazil).

He was warmly received at the Rio de Janeiro airport by Ambassador Breno Costa of Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations, alongside members of his delegation. Accompanying President Tinubu are notable ministers, including Yusuf Tuggar (Foreign Affairs), Idi Maiha (Livestock Development), Hannatu Musawa (Art, Tourism, and Culture), Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi (Agriculture and Food Security), and Amb. Mohammed Mohammed (Director General, National Intelligence Agency).

This year’s G20 Summit, themed “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” will focus on addressing critical global challenges, including poverty, climate change, digital transformation, and global governance reforms. Brazilian President Lula da Silva, who has held the G20 presidency since December 2023, is hosting the summit, which runs from November 18 to 19.

President Tinubu is expected to engage in high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit to advance Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms and strengthen international partnerships. The summit will also see the participation of 19 member countries, along with representatives from the African Union and the European Union.
