The Federal Government has announced the renaming of the University of Abuja in honor of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who recently marked his 90th birthday.
The institution will now be known as Yakubu Gowon University.
The decision was disclosed on Monday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing at the State House following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, which was chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
Idris explained that the renaming recognizes Gowon’s immense contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development during his tenure as Head of State. He further noted that the proposal for the name change will be submitted to the National Assembly for formal approval to ensure proper legislative backing.
