Former Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has criticized presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga for making disparaging remarks against former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Speaking during an interview on Nigeria Info FM, George described Onanuga’s comments as disrespectful and contrary to Yoruba cultural values, which emphasize respect for elders. He emphasized that regardless of political differences, elders should be treated with dignity.

“An old man who could be Bayo Onanuga’s father said something, and you insult him. Even if you want to react, Yoruba culture does not allow such behaviour,” George stated.

The controversy stems from Obasanjo’s recent remarks at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University, where he described Nigeria’s 2023 elections as a “travesty” and criticized the nation’s trajectory toward becoming a failing state.

In response, Onanuga accused Obasanjo of hypocrisy, attributing Nigeria’s current economic challenges to his administration. This exchange has since sparked widespread reactions from political figures and the public.

Chief Bode George warned that Onanuga would face repercussions for his conduct. “Someday, he [Onanuga] will pay back because there will be a day after, and that’s more important,” he cautioned.

The incident highlights growing tensions among Nigeria’s political elite as debates over the country’s leadership, economy, and electoral process continue to dominate national discourse.
